  • Analogue and digital - all in one

There are many photographers who shoot in digital, and quite a few, but fewer photographers who shoot in analogue.

There are also those who take pictures in both systems. That requires carrying two cameras, but... What if there were cameras that you could shoot in both formats? There are, the Hasselblad H-series cameras, from the earliest (H1, H1D, H2D, H3D, H3D II, H4D) to the latest (H5D, H6D) are medium format and consist of :

-Camera body

-Lens

-Viewfinder

Handgrip (for the battery) -Backrest.

-Back.

Let's talk about the back, because this back, which is interchangeable, can be digital or analogue, so that during the session you can replace one for the other at any time and take both digital and analogue pictures.

The analogue back (Hasselblad HM 16 - 32) uses rolls of 120, 12-exposure film, black and white or colour. The digital backs are 22, 39, 50 or 60 megapixels.

A starter setup and not a hell of a lot of money (not cheap either) could be an H1, H1D,H2D or H3D body, an 80mm lens (the Hasselblad is excellent), a 22 or 39 mp back and a couple of batteries. Batteries can be battery or rechargeable. The battery ones run out rather quickly, especially with the digital back. These cameras also support digital backs from other brands (Phase One, Leaf...).

Pay attention to the choice of body, as the Hasselblad H3D II and H4D do not support analogue back; the others do.

There are also other medium format and large format cameras that can work both ways.  And you can also work with the Hasselblad V series. We'll talk about both in another article.

With this setup you can work in analogue and digital and more importantly... in Medium Format, i.e. 60 x 45 mm negatives and with a digital sensor up to 49 x 36 mm.
