Name: Carlo Ferrara
Place of birth: Novi Ligure, Italy
Genres: Surrealism
How did you get started as a photographer?
I started taking it seriously in 2007. But I've always taken pictures, like everyone else.
What was the best piece of advice you received starting out?
Look at many photos, take many photos—a simple and always valid piece of advice.
Why did you choose surrealism in particular?
I am not good at painting or sculpting, so photography was the best way to express my ideas. I think photography offers a thousand different ways to express yourself. None exclude the other.
What makes a good picture better than average?
Passion. This is all you need. The author's passion will shine through their images. Obviously, you also need to know techniques, but then you have to put them at the service of great ideas and hard work.
In some images, it's the idea that excels. In others, it's the challenge or the technique. However, they are all the result of a passion. And it's the mix of these elements that creates exceptional images.
Which photographers inspire you, and why?
If we are talking only about photographers, Rodney Smith is a name I would mention for sure. More broadly, I am also inspired by all surrealistic artists, such as Salvador Dalí and René Magritte.
Can you tell us about the most memorable photo you have ever shot and what made it so special?
I don't have a favourite photo. And, to be honest, each image I took has its own anecdote. Some have won prizes, and some excited me more. But I find myself loving all of them.
What is the biggest challenge you have had to overcome, and how did you do it?
Wow, tricky question! But I would say self-criticism is my biggest challenge. It's the most complicated thing to overcome, and not only among photographers.
What is your essential camera equipment (up to 3 pieces of camera equipment you couldn't live without)?
A tripod and any camera. If I am shooting just for fun, I use analogic cameras. I develop the rolls in a darkroom and print them on paper. I enjoy it, and it also teaches me a lot. But my work is mainly done digitally. My favourite focal length is between 20 mm and 30 mm.
Why have you decided to become a Curator of 100 ASA?
The enthusiasm of 100 ASA's founders was contagious. They had a new project, a sensible plan and a great desire for creating something new. This was the main reason. Then I thought I could be useful, or instead, that I could to offer what little I know and have learned over the years about photography.
