Hello HJ

Let's start from the beginning.

My name is Huijun (HJ) Yang and I now live in Florida, USA. I was born and brought up in China. I came to the US for the Ph.D. program in geophysical fluid dynamics and worked as a research scientist in areas from atmospheric science to climate and physical oceanography as well as applied mathematics. Later I worked on real estate development and investment as well as on early-stage startup investments as an angel investor. I play tennis and pickleball regularly. I also love hiking, biking, and distance running. My reading includes biographies, science and tech developments as well as religion and philosophy.

And now let’s focus on photography… How did you get started in photography?

I started photography when we realized that my family loves to travel but I really did not know how to operate a camera. My life experience helps me focus on the basic principles of photography, not technical details alone. Photography introduced me to wildness travel and exploration which is now part of my life.

How do you think your life experience affects the photographs you take?

I served as president of the Suncoast Camera Club of Clearwater, founded in 1961, and Florida director of the Photographic Society of America. I also served as chairman of the Tampa Bay International Business Council and the founding chairman of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Tampa Bay among other leadership positions in local and national organizations as well as private company boards.

How did other photographers influence your work?

Two photographers greatly influenced my photography. The first is Frans Lanting whom I met during my first trip to Antarctica. His work and devotion really impressed and motivated me. The second is Marc Adams whose landscape photos, editing principles, wilderness experience, and life philosophy help me shape my experience and photographic philosophy.

How would you define your style in photography?

My photography is focused on the wilderness exploration side and I much more enjoy exploring the wild places few have gone.

What equipment do you use - cameras, lenses...?

For wildlife, I use Nikon D5 and Nikon 180-400mm lens and for landscape, I use Nikon D810 or D850 and Nikon 14-24mm lens most time.

What software do you use to process your photographs?

I use Lightroom and Photoshop to process my photos.

What is your favourite photo and why?

One of my favorite photos is Evening in Chile Fjord- two dolphins jump toward the three sister mountain. It was taken during my recent 22-day photography expedition led by Marc Adams. It captured the essence of the place, calm deep water, high mountain peaks, and warm evening light with wildlife at the perfect place and moment.

What are your tips for beginner photographers?

My advice for the beginners is to learn from the best and do your best, to be yourself and to enjoy the journey first, not to chase likes on social media and numerous awards

Why did you decide to join 100ASA?

I was invited by the co-founder to join the 100ASA as a curator. I am glad to know so many great photographers here and to be part of this great community.
